Adopting Ymir the Sneasel Empty
PostSubject: Adopting Ymir the Sneasel   Adopting Ymir the Sneasel EmptySun Oct 20, 2019 8:02 pm

» Name: Ymir
» Gender: Female
» Species: #215 Sneasel the Sharp Claw Pokemon
» Affiliation/Rank: Wanderer

» Why do you want to adopt them?:

Familiar Territory: Ymir is a foreigner. A northern foreigner. A foreigner with specifically Russian flavor, in fact. This is very fortunate and exciting for me, as I have an odd ammount of experience interpreting Russian ("northern") characters in roleplay. One of my longest running characters, one I still play in an outside group to this day, is a young Russian girl. I have formulated my own Russian accent (complete with broken grammar) through this character that would allow me to easily transition to roleplaying Ymir's fish out of water phase. I have actually also been abroad to Russia, and I've learned many small trivia facts that I could re-interprate and use to flavor Ymir's "Northern" heritage (not that Ymir isn't already stellarly fleshed out as is).

Fun Character: I have adored Ymir since she was first posted on the site. I had the privilege of checking through her bio when she was first posted, and I was heartbroken to see her roleplayer go after putting so much effort into a character that was incredibly well-developed for the time. I can tell that there was a lot of love and thought put into her creation, and I'm very excited to continue and respect that original vision in my own way. I feel like Ymir is a good balance of both in and out of my "personality" comfort zone, so I would not struggle in adapting to depicting her.

Academy: I believe Ymir is a great candidate to be a character dedicated to the academy. Being that she's from far away and only has a basic grasp on the local language, culture, ect., it makes sense that her parents or even Ymir herself would set herself up in a place where she could quickly become acclimated, like the school. Leading is also a natural part of her character, and once she becomes involved I don't see her leaving easily. The academy is a great center for her to work out of. In more meta terms, Lennox's thread slots fill very quickly at the academy with him being a highly active teacher, and there are a lot more students registered at the school than I can possibly maintain with him alone. While I don't see Ymir becoming a teacher immediately, I think her natural leadership capabilities and active personality make her a great candidate to be a club leader. This would give me another way to provide people with ways to get involved in the academy and get their merit points up while Lennox's classes are maxed out (at least until NPC teachers are approved.)

Academy P.II: As I have stated, I do not plan to keep Lennox as the headmaster of Peak Academy. I prefer that my characters aren't all double-dipping in multiple orgs if they don't have to be. While Lennox has fit very well as the academy's founder so far, he was originally created with the express purpose of serving as a head character and semi-foil for Victoria in the Blacktooth Kingdom, and I still fully intend for him to end up there permanently. That said, I will need a character to fill his abence. Originally, I had deemed Adrol as the best suited out of all my current characters to adopt the academy due to his worldliness and his desire to explore and create. However, I currently have no plans to involve him in the academy, and I do not see it as something he would be intrinsically drawn to, given how aloof he is. To just slap him into the position would feel disjointed, and I would not have good roleplay justifications for why he took up the responsibilities.
All that said, I believe this makes Ymir a prime candidate for assuming the title of Peak Academy Headmaster permanently. She will have risen from it's ranks, she is an apt leader with a history in social politics, and she is motivated to take care of the weak and greenhorn by nature. In these ways, the role very much compliments her as a character. I also believe that her more active personality will make her a more interesting headmaster that Adrol would have been, given he is a more subdued and passive character than she is.

» Sample of roleplay: [Ymir has no threads for me to continue from, so I will be continuing directly from her personal history leaving the frozen north to come down to Grassveil. during this time she reminisces on her life in the north, and upon arriving in the southern towns she quickly begins to realize she misses home more than she thought she might. Ever determined, however, she pushes forward.]

"Mother and Father,

Hello. It has been 5 days now since I left home. I hope the reconstruction efforts have been progressing to your liking, though I know there will still be much to sort through even after the structures have been rebuilt. I still keep in mind your words to me about how this is supposed to be a unifying experience for everyone. How we will grow stronger through the hardship we all have experienced together. I can only hope you are right, as I will not be able to share in the same hardships that you and everyone else are experiencing.

I have to admit I still would prefer to be home, but I understand the importance of ensuring that the settlements in the south understand our perspective. I only hope I am the right choice in helping them empathize with your cause. I have been practicing with my southern tongue, but it still is not quite up to the standards required down here. I am frustrated, but I will continue. I hope sometime soon I can make a journey to visit and see home again.

My travels were delayed a bit, so I have not quite reached the place you called "Grassveil Town." I have encountered the ocean for the first time, however- as well as a different town called "Rainfront Town." I do not enjoy it here. The water is beautiful, yes, but the sand and the air both get sickeningly hot when the sun is out and I often feel parched just wandering in the dirt. I had considered ending my trip early after the delay, but I will certainly not be staying here. Thus, I will continue on to "Grassveil" as I originally planned. It should take another three days, presumably.

Please tell everyone I miss them for me. I will write again as soon as I make ground in Grassveil. I love you.

Ymir
"

Ymir set her pen down on the table provided in her room in the inn and stretched. It was early in the morning, and she had every intention of leaving this gritty city as soon as she possibly could- she just needed to drop this letter off with a courier to be sent to her parents in the northern lands. She had to admit- she had at least enjoyed staying in this "inn." It was impressive to see a house- no, an entire complex- built specifically for the purpose of quartering travelers. In the north, families would just take turns sharing their houses for a night or two. That's how it had worked, anyways.

The sneasel shook her head. Her mind was already trying to go back home, again. That wasn't her job right now. She needed to make a home here now, where the days were as long as the nights and the air always felt a bit balmy. She would not let her family down- though, honestly, it had been a pain so far. Pokemon in the south were so... strange. She was trying to learn about how they thought, but in this town alone they varied so much... it seemed they weren't quite as unified as a settlement, rather they were individuals that would occasionally settle into groups that benefited their desires or needs. The trick was just figuring out what that unification was between each pokemon she came across.

...That was enough thinking. It was time to get on the road.

Ymir gathered her scant few things from the room and exited- ensuring that she locked the door behind her. She had understood that much from the owner of the establishment, at least. She also knew she was to return the key before she left, but as she approached the front desk- there was a different pokemon there than before. A red cat. Ymir immediately straightened up, feeling the need to appear collected in front of the new face. The other pokemon appeared disheveled compared to her- perhaps the nocturnal type had been working recently... Ymir could respect that. She placed the key on the counter so that it made enough noise to catch the tired pokemon's attention.

"snuurf- Mmm? Oh, sorry- good morning," the other pokemon greeted her, lifting her head from what looked like a large book. "Can I help you?"

"I am to bring key to return," Ymir stated as bluntly as possible. In truth, she wanted to keep from causing the conversation from devolving into a comedic skit about her base understanding of southern grammar, as many of her conversations had since arriving here. She wasn't interested in another condescending lesson from someone who took joy in the fact that they knew more than her about their own territory.

"...That's quite an accent you have," the woman replied, accepting the key from Ymir. Ymir sighed in turn. She supposed the topic of conversation was kind of unavoidable when she was so clearly not from the area. Thankfully, the woman hadn't tried to correct her at all yet- either Ymir had been right in her phrasing, or the woman understood how to carry a normal conversation with another person. Ymir decided acknowledge this and respond to the woman's small-talk.

"My home far north, vwery much norts tzan most people from tze here go," Ymir explained, pausing every few moments to consider her selection of words.

The woman blinked, seemingly processing for a moment. "Oh, wow. That's a big commute. The northern lands? What made you want to do that?"

Ymir was so relieved to have finally found a normal conversation that even the mundane small talk was making her smile. It felt much more normal and natural, like someone finally found it in them to speak to her as though she was equal- like she deserved. She was actually eager to indulge the conversation further. "Yes. My family sends me to see your Soutz. Wve do not hawve much of tze contacts- wvery few of us even speks the tongue. I wvas wvery lucky tzat my parents could teach me tze basics," she explained proudly to the apparent innkeeper, who was nodding along slowly. There was still a pause before her next response.

"That's... really impressive. You don't see a lot of people leave home to start over completely. Well, welcome to Rainfront. Are you going to need your room longer? You don't have to check out, you know."

After a moment of translating in her head, Ymir dismissed the innkeeper's offer with a shake of her head. "No, I wvill be continue Soutz more. To 'Grassveil'. My parents wvish me to learn a start tzere." The innkeeper seemed to perk up a bit, hearing this.

"Oh, really? If you're going all the way down their to learn, you'll probably be interested in checking out the academy. It's a school, so it'll probably be worthwhile to you."

"...Academy?"

"Yeah. It's called Peak Academy. It's very close to town, there are all kinds of landmarks that will lead you to it. They teach all kinds of stills- combat, art, exploration practices... maybe it'll help you find what you're looking to learn while you're here."

Ymir left the inn - though not without properly thanking the kind lady- with more confidence than she had entered it with. The people in the South had a whole community dedicated to education.... though she skilled, the prospect of filling in the gaps of her knowledge sounded exactly like what she needed in order to make herself seen as more of a person who belonged in these parts. Upon learning that the apparent school was just a community of like-minded pokemon teaching each other, she only became more sure. She couldn't believe that the same mentalities that her parents had fought for were already being embraced in the South... well, presumably. She had to see it for herself before she decided.

Ymir dropped her letter off with the first courier she saw, and immediately began her final 3-day trek for Grassveil Town.
