» Personality:
Dex is a firebrand (heh) who feels it necessary to take initiative. This is not born out of the impression that his companions are inadequate, but of his own need to protect those he cares for (even if at first he may seem distant). At times he will come off as a bit bossy, and has trouble with listening to the advice of others as he would rather forge his own way. He has a strong sense of justice, and only feels the need to question his actions when the results go against his intended outcome. Even so, if you are someone that he holds with high regard, he will question his actions and rethink his position. This is especially the case for those who have proved themselves capable in intense situations.
Under normal circumstances he works very efficiently, and gives those he is paired with roles for the group that they best fit based on their demonstrated skill sets. He puts himself on the forefront, and will usually lead the charge. Even if this puts him in an unfavorable position he feels as if it were his duty to put himself out there first. He does not expect this of others. When he is out of his element, however, he can become irrational. Instead of relying on his thoughts, he will rely on his instincts to make it through. Due to this, he hates being backed into a corner.
If you hurt someone he cares about, you should probably run. He doesn't take kindly to those who bring harm to his friends. If a problem arises, he will remain watchful to protect what he loves. He takes pride in keeping those close to him safe, and would rather put himself in harms way. He isn't one to divulge his affections for others, and remains very private. As someone who is always on the defensive, and who puts himself at the forefront, he is subconsciously aware that these actions could very well get him into a lot of trouble. It could even get him killed. So, to save others the pain of missing him when he's gone he keeps others at an emotional distance. Even though he would dearly miss his companions, its better that way. There's less tears.
On his down time he would prefer to hone his skills, train, and travel. He loves to explore the world, something he feels as though he picked up from his parents. Dex also enjoys relaxing in the presence of his closest company, or adventuring with them. To see sights that others aren't even aware existed, and to go places that no other pokemon has gone before fills him with excitement. It's a big world out there after all, so why not try to see all of it?
Dex is very wary of strangers. He questions their intentions, motives, and actions before deciding whether or not he can trust them. It takes time to earn his trust, but once you have it you can expect him to put his neck out there for you. However, he also expects the same of you. Dex holds those that he is close with to specific expectations: to avoid double-crossing him, and to stay true to themselves. Unfortunately, he can be perceived as judgmental because of this. Regardless, he will fight to his dying breath for the ones he loves. Even when the odds are impossible, tucking his flame-tail between his legs and yielding is not within his nature.
» Likes:
Berries: Its embarrassing, but the Chimchar is head over heels for berries. His mother would reward him with berries if he did a good job of taking care of his siblings while she was away, and so eating the fruit reminds him of home.
Training: Whether it's training his mind, skills, or strengths, he has a constant need to get stronger. Not a day can be wasted that he doesn't improve himself in some form or another.
Exploring: We all have a limited time on this world, so why not try to see as much as possible before our flames burn out? Due to his family being nomadic, it is within his nature to want to travel and see the world.
Art: When he was still with his family, his father taught him how to make clay-mold and charred-mud figurines. During his downtime he may add to his collections by making figurines of other pokemon. He keeps all of this to himself, as someone finding out about his collection would be a little more than embarrassing. It helps Dex to relieve himself of stress, and gives him something to focus his negative energy on.
» Dislikes:
Snakes: This is not in reference to Sevipers or Milotics, but to those who would betray him. Pokemon who would gladly sabotage or use him for personal gain are Pokemon that should stay as far away from him as possible. He will not tolerate those who wish to see him fail.
Bad Weather: Whether its a storm, or snow, bad weather makes the Chimchar feel extremely uneasy. This is especially the case for missions. Bad weather weakens his attacks, and detracts from his efficiency. The better the weather, the more confident he is in his abilities.
Being Alone: He is deathly afraid of losing all of the companions he's made. Being abandoned frightens him, and losing his friends on the battlefield terrifies him even more. Its not something he would ever admit, even to himself, but the idea of losing his comrades in any form or fashion is a constant worry for Dex, and so he goes out of his way to avoid that as much as possible.
» History:
Shadowhue Forest
His family are a nomadic Pokemon. They travel the world in search of the mythical Escapade Falls, a legendary underground watering hole where minerals are plentiful. The water is said to greatly enhance the growth of all Pokemon. It is claimed that there are no fights over this water source, as the Pokemon who lived there chose to live in harmony with one another. As such, he was born far away from his parent's homelands. His home was Shadowhue Forest.
He grew up with his father and mother, both of which are Infernapes, along with two other siblings. Out of the three of them, Dex was the eldest brother, Ivarice was the youngest sibling, and Len was the middle child. His other siblings were great troublemakers, what with constantly stealing his things and ganging up on him for play wrestling matches. Ivarice in particular would make a habit of stealing a few of his berries for dinner. He loved them ever still, and took care of them as best as he could.
His parents, Janelle and Madeon, did most of the heavy lifting for taking care of the family. His mother, Janelle, being the gatherer of the family would go on trips throughout the area to find food and materials they would need. Sometimes she would be gone for days at a time, but would return with chocolate for Dex if he were well behaved. Meanwhile, the father chose to stay at home and meet the needs or raising his three children. Any immediate needs that he and his children would need, the father would go to great lengths to satisfy. As such, Madeon would put Dex in charge from time to time in case he needed to take an especially long leave. Ivarice and Len were tasked with gathering drinking water for the family daily as a small way of letting them contribute. Dex took pride in his duties as an elder brother, knowing his parents counted on him. He looked up to his parents, and held them with higher regard than he ever would anyone else.
One day, he made friends with a Poochyena, who went by the name of Gabe, that was traveling through the area. Dex had never seen a Poochyena before. After learning of Dex's mud sculptures, and their shared love of chocolate, Dex and Gabe hit it off immediately. Whenever Dex was not busy caring for his siblings, the two would run off and explore the area together. Gabe knew much more about the Shadowhue Forest than Dex, and so every new experience for Dex was a treasured memory. Gabe even taught Dex how to swim, and Dex in kind taught him how to make the scultpures (providing the necessary heat with his flaming tail of course).
One day, the Poochyena who went by the name of Gabe disappeared. Dex searched for him when he had the time to, but by then Gabe had disappeared. Only a few days later had a large pack of Mightyena returned with Gabe amongst them. According to the leader of the pack, Gabe had been sent to scout out a nearby area for new territory that they would then lay claim to. Dex's father tried to speak with the Mightyena to come to some form of agreement. After all, it wasn't as if they were planning on staying at the Shadowhue Forest forever. It was simply an extended sojourn.
The Mightyena was not having it, and gave them a few hours to clear the area, or else they would clear the chimp pokemon out themselves. Madeous knew that they could not leave just yet, as Janelle had been gone on another one of her trips for a few days. She would return soon, but if she came back and the family was gone he didn't want to think of the consequences. With a flaming indignation, the father moved his family instead to a nearby area to intercept her before things became messy. The anger and feelings of betrayal that Dex felt from Gabe left a heavy weight over him, with the painstaking question of why he had done this to them. That was the last time he had ever seen Gabe.
They waited until nightfall. Gray clouds hovered overhead and began to pour. There wasn't much shelter for the four chimps besides the trees overhead. They were as careful as they could have possibly been to remain hidden behind a ledge of stones and trees. That didn't stop a Mightyena scout from spotting them. He and a group of others found their location and chased after them. To protect his family, Dex and Madeous took a stand against them. It wasn't enough. They were outnumbered two to five, and the Infernape was inexperienced with combat.
As things seemed hopeless, a flaming wall was mad between the remaining Mightyena and Madeous, Janelle making her return. She turned to Dex and wasted no time in telling him to take his siblings and run. Madeous stayed behind with her, Dex making off with the rest of his family. They disappeared in the forest, but even then could not escape the Mightyena pack's reach. Spotted by the pack's leader, he chased Dex, Len, and Ivarice down. Having no choice, Dex did the only thing he thought would help give them a chance to escape. He turned and faced the Mightyena head on.
He fought bravely, buying as much time as he could for his siblings to make headway. His parents were fighting to protect them, and he was the only one left to take care of them. So he fought. He fought with every breath he had, until he fainted.
When he came to he was in his mother and father's arms. He was surprised that they had managed to escape. He was elated to know that his efforts had saved his family, even if it were in some small way. It was only then that he noticed that Ivarice was missing. He looked to his father and mother for an explanation. She was probably just sent off to gather water for the family, as she usually was. Janelle and Madeous couldn't respond. At least, not with the answer that he wanted to hear. He cried that night, and the night after that, for he would never see Ivarice again.
From that moment forward, Dex pledged to himself and others that he would do his best to protect others. It may have been a childish, naive dream, but he wanted to do his best to help as many pokemon as he could. He wanted to keep others safe from ever having to experience the same pains that he had. After a bit of training from his mother, and as much knowledge as his father could give to him about the Pokemon world, he left to Grassveil Town in order to form a rescue team. They didn't want to send their little boy off on his own, but they were proud of him and understood that this was a path that he had chosen for himself.
» Other: His family cannot currently be contacted, as it has been some time since Dex last saw them. They're still searching, and Dex understood why they could not stay.
