» Why do you want to adopt them?: There's a variety of reasons explaining why I chose to adopt Ashen.
I'll start with the practical reasons. First off, the character is a completely blank slate, with no threads, teams, or relationships. Since I'd rather not refer back to past RPs that I did not participate in, this is a huge selling point. It makes things less complicated for me. Secondly, this character was archived years ago, making it very unlikely that the original owner will come back and attempt to reclaim her. Finally, she's free! I know it sounds like a petty reason, but I'd rather not wait until I get 5000 Poke only to make a similar character.
Of course, those aren't the only reasons I wanted to adopt Ashen. To list some of the more personal reasons, I'll start with her name, which really caught my attention. Let's be honest, most of the names of archived Pokemon are... Well, seemingly random at best. It's not like you can change them, either. I happen to be a big fan of type-related names (hence "Pilot" the Taillow), so Ashen's name really floats my boat.
Her personality was what really motivated me to attempt to adopt her, though. I've been having trouble RPing with Pilot, who has a really outgoing personality, so I figured that my first adoption would be the exact opposite: a reserved Pokemon who has bad people skills. Ashen fits this description perfectly. She's much more like me than Pilot is, which should make her much easier to RP with.
Also, since AshenInferno was rather vague with the personality section, there's a lot of room for interpretation. Because of this, I can really make the character my own without contradicting what is written in the original bio. Going into the adoption process, this was my biggest fear.
Ashen's history is also pretty interesting, mainly because of how different it is from what most people write. Unlike many characters, Ashen lives in Grassveil, and has a close relationship with a member of her family. This is pretty quaint when you compare it to all of the dramatic stories of wanderers who lack families. I can't really explain why this appeals to me, but it does.
Finally, her love of fighting combined with a well-chosen moveset and ability (exactly how I would've picked them for a Houndour) made me feel that the character was as close to perfect as I was going to get. I love writing in sparring threads, so these things are really important to me.
» Sample of roleplay: (I hope it's alright that I used another character for this. I figured that introducing somebody new to Ashen would showcase how nervous she gets when around strangers, and having them spar would help illustrate Ashen's love for fighting.)
It was a bone-chilling winter's day in Pecha Forest. Snow had fallen a day prior, lightly coating the ground and trees. It was quite a beautiful sight, but few Pokemon were outside to see it. Most were spending the day indoors, where the oppressive cold could not reach them. There was one Pokemon who didn't seem to be bothered by the freezing weather, however. Her name was Ashen.
Like most days, Ashen the Houndour was spending her free time rigorously training in Pecha. Ever since she had started doing this years ago, it had become a daily routine, almost a ritual of sorts. She would practice her attacks on trees and rocks for hours, trying to perfect them. Afterwards, she would stroll through the area, searching for ferals to battle.
That day, however, it didn't seem that any wild Pokemon were around. The Houndour had been wandering for a while, and hadn't seen a single soul. Perhaps the cold weather was to blame... Regardless of the reason, the young Houndour was alone. Not that it really bothered her. After all, she spent most of her time away from others, so she was used to it.
Just as she was beginning to enjoy the silence of the frosty forest, Ashen heard the soft crunch of something padding through the snow coming from behind her. She swiveled around, and saw a large, blue, dinosaur-like creature approaching her. Almost immediately, the Houndour panicked, unsure of the creature's intentions. It definitely wasn't a feral, as she had never seen anything quite like it in the area. She froze in fear, and the unknown Pokemon made its way to to her.
“Hi there!” The quadruped, clearly male, beamed, with a cheeky grin on his face. It wore an orange scarf, and had strange, green, sail-like structures above its eyes.
“U-uhm, hi,” Ashen responded shifting uncomfortably. After that, the two blankly stared at each other. The Houndour was unsure of what to say to the stranger.
Suddenly, the other Pokemon started laughing uncontrollably. “Heehee, you're funny,” He giggled, smiling even brighter. “Name's Amari! I'm kinda new around here. What's your name?”
For a moment, she paused, so nervous that she had forgotten to respond. “I-I'm A-Ashen,” The Houndour replied uneasily, taking a step back. “...What k-kind of P-Pokemon are you?” She asked curiously, having never seen a member of his species before.
“Nice to meet you, Ashen!” Amari cheerfully exclaimed. “I'm an Amaura! We're really common up in the North,” He explained, hoping that the Houndour had some geographical knowledge. “Anyways, I was here to train, but I don't really see any wild Pokemon around here... So, do you wanna spar?” The Amaura proposed.
“Uh, yeah, s-sure!” Ashen responded, her attitude changing significantly. Her tail began to wag, and she looked much more comfortable. “A-alright, you make the first move,” She challenged, forcing a smile.
Amari was taken back, honestly not expecting such an unconfident Pokemon to want to battle. Still, he got into a battle pose, and prepared himself for combat. “Great, but I'm not going easy on you!” He taunted, before letting out a low Growl and charging his opponent with a Take Down attack.
Ashen saw Amari's attack coming from a mile away. Without even thinking, the Dark Pokemon sidestepped, and Sucker Punched the Amaura in the side of the head. Amari let out a surprised cry, and collapsed as soon as he was hit. This gave Ashen the opportunity to follow up the unexpected strike with an Ember, which caused her opponent to cry out in distress.
“Alright! Okay! You win!” Amari shouted, having already given up. He was feeling quite dizzy from the punch she had dealt to his head, and the searing sensation of fire on his icy hide didn't help. In just a few seconds, it appeared as if Ashen had won the battle.
Perhaps her training had paid off after all.
