Adopting Lincoln the Riolu Empty
PostSubject: Adopting Lincoln the Riolu   Adopting Lincoln the Riolu EmptySat Sep 19, 2015 11:59 pm

» Name: Lincoln the Riolu
» Gender: Male
» Species: Riolu
» Affiliation/Rank: Hopping from boxcar to boxcar (aka hobo)

» Why do you want to adopt them?:
-I feel like Lincoln is another blank slate character with lots of good potential to tap into. While he doesn't have a lot of history of topics on the site, especially when compared to other adoptable characters, I feel that there are still opportunities to build upon within what has been presented. In my personal interpretation of his history, I believe Lincoln has come from a town that is big in acreage, due to being farmland. Now that he is away from the work-centric life of a farmer, he feels more at ease and relaxed now that he now has more time to loosen up and pursue the currently shallow and underdeveloped dreams that came from a life of nothing but being bound to the land. This helps back up his laid-back, yet excitable personality. Due to his experiences with Acro of Team Roark, I will have him get interested in exploration and decide to give it a shot in my short term actions with this character (the piece that I have written for the role play). My current long-term plan, as of now, is to further collaborate with Bluekat12, and have Lincoln meet up with the character Kira during his experimentation with exploration. The two form a bond, which for a while almost entirely shape Lincoln's thoughts and actions. From her, he gains an initial impression of dislike of the concepts of the guild and rescue teams, and he will join her in the search for a more suitable independent organization that promises productive and enjoyable exploration work for the both of them. Beyond that, I will be roleplaying through Lincoln's thoughts as he as influenced by other external sources beyond Kira, and as he further enjoys his adventures. Through those adventures, he begins to question things by his own merit and he will begin developing his own worldveiw.

-I really enjoy roleplaying coming-of-age adventures and watching young characters develop, and I feel that each time I do so I discover something new about the process. With Mercury, the challenge has been setting up her all-consuming innocence and then having her overcome the shock of having that innocence so brutally challenged by reality. With Simon, the challenge was rping through the aftermath of something he resonates with, that makes him feel like him, forcing him away from the thing he loves most. Astir came with the challenge of re-learning the world, and operating through a similar innocence to Mercury. I am excited to now adopt and work with Lincoln, as he poses a concept of impressionability and dependence that I have not yet had a chance to work through. While this means I may lack some of the more specific skills of someone who has worked with this character type before it also means I get to in some ways grow with the character, allowing me to more efficiently empathize with him and get into his character.

» Sample of roleplay:
[This piece is continued canonically some time after "An Archen's Ambition", and will be used to support Lincoln's timeline and history, the following collaboration with Bluekat12, and subsequent roleplays. To summarize, Lincoln has been staying on Furnace Peak for a while after meeting with Acro the Archen and Astrid the Dratini there, and has discussed with them their rescue team. He is now traveling home to Grassveil.]

As he approached the foot of the treacherous Furnace Peak, Lincoln started to think back on the experience of meeting Acro the guild member and his strange teammate. While the colorful bird had seemed rather nervous and flighty, which Lincoln quickly realized was a humorous and ironic description, the bird had had such an impressive air of worldliness to him. It boggled his mind, imagining a small bird like Acro traveling to the many different places that his job required him to travel to without the power of flight to aid him. Such was the nature of a guild member, he supposed. Did all adventurers strive to be part of the guild, Lincoln wondered? Or did all guild member strive to be explorers? He wondered if there were any separations between the two, if one could exist at all. He hadn't had a lot of chances to talk about it at home on the farm, adventure and dreams had to take a back seat to farm chores. The mons he had encountered in Grassveil often made it seem like adventure was strictly for the guild. The guild didn't seem all that bad, after all it did seem like a good place to go and find some fulfillment for the urges he'd had as a kid, hearing tales about bounty hunters roaming the land, capturing criminals... Roaming the land, huh? Lincoln hadn't given it much though before now, but now that he was thinking about it those stories didn't mention much about the "land" the heroes were roaming. They didn't really get out to explore much, did they? Lincoln reasoned that they probably didn't have the time. What were they missing, though? Lincoln began to have his doubts. He had heard that Mystery Dungeons were always changing and never appeared the same. If that was true, then there was always something new to see, right? What if those bounty hunters missing out on that explorers that Acro were getting to see?

While pondering all of this, Lincoln began to wander far off the route that he had originally taken to get to the volcano. By the time it was dark, the small mon only had a vague idea of where he was in relation to his surroundings. He stopped for the night, setting himself up in the branch of a nearby evergreen tree. There, sheltered by the dense needles, he fell asleep to the tune of the uncertain questions echoing in his head.

He woke up early the next morning after a short night of mentally, emotionally, and physically uncomfortable sleep. With his opening of his eyes, he decided he would give it a try. In his daze the previous day, Lincoln had accidentally begun walking North West instead of due West, placing him just below what he had learned was the Icy Lands and just a bit past Grassveil. He decided to continue heading away from Grassveil since he was already heading that way, since he had no pressing duties to attend to in the town and he was free to do anything he wanted before seeking a job to do in town. There couldn't be any harm in it, and it would be better to get this over with and tested now so that he knew whether or not he liked adventure and exploration. Those two things certainly couldn't be avoided in guild life it seemed, which meant that they would be part of everyday life if he were to join the guild. Lincoln felt rather sure of this decision as he began his trek, going South West from the place where he had spent the night. His traveling gave him plenty of time to think, and think he did. Well, perhaps it was not so much thinking as it was fantasizing, as many young and old mons alike can be expected to do. He envisioned himself as a great hero, and explorer who always did good things. Who would always try things and discover lots of things by trying them. He could see himself going to places, finding new things.... Maybe not specific things yet, because Lincoln didn't have the greatest idea of what he was looking for. But yeah. Adventure. And exploration. Those words were probably interchangeable... well, were they? Some time into his mental and physical journey, this thought forced Lincoln to really think again. What exactly was adventure, and why was it a different thing from exploration?

Lincoln frowned as he mulled over this. They seemed like they ment the same thing, and yet... Lincoln realized he had never really heard them used interchangeably. Together in the same sentence? Yes. But had he heard them used in place of one another? Lincoln couldn't recall. He knew they both required traveling.... well, more specifically, going to places. Perhaps this was the common point where they started to break apart? Lincoln had heard a lot of mons talking about adventure in the context of vacations, like going away for a bit to a place that's foreign or far away. Mons talked about exploring on vacations too, but they didn't much talk about exploring FOR vacations... They mostly talked about exploring when it came to stuff they didn't know about. Lincoln observed this schism and suddenly he had an answer for himself. Adventuring was traveling to places that you knew about, and exploring was looking for things you don't know about! Lincoln felt pleased with himself for figuring this out. When he thought about what he had done, he realized he had even done some exploring already by finding an answer he didn't even know about! Was exploration only about physical stuff? It seemed as though the more Lincoln thought about it, the more Lincoln realized he had done a lot of mind exploration in the past. Regardless, with all of this encouragement, Lincoln found himself thinking more and more about exploration and less and less about outlaws. By the time he reached the lands in the West, Lincoln was already hyped for his exploration.

Lincoln now happened upon an island in a lake, so surrounded by water that he had to use a strange set of stepping stones to get across. As he walked across the stones, he couldn't help but wonder who had set them up, and why they existed. It was certainly a beautiful place, but wouldn't that just mean that it needed to be protected more? The little Riolu felt entirely bewildered by this, encouraging him to press on into the dungeon and figure out why it was so... different. Why the pokemon within it actually welcomed strangers and travelers.

The second the Riolu stepped off that last stepping stone and onto the pond island, he felt something different about the place, some strange aura pounding in his head to the rhythm of his pulse. He became a bit unnerved by how. The experience of confronting something so much bigger than himself made the Riolu falter in his steps, yet he was so compelled to continue. Something in this aura was beating... some kind of creature without a physical form. Was this aura what was keeping the forest eternally on the brink of death? Lincoln continued deeper and deeper into the eternal Autumn, feeling both fear and fascination prickle up and down his spine. His pulse beat faster, the aura beat faster; with every step he took, the atmosphere rose higher and higher towards some sort of strange, overwhelming crescendo... leading to the discovery that made Lincoln stop moving entirely.

In the distance, a silhouette. A strange shrine waited for him eerily in the distance. Lincoln's pulse raced. The apex of the aura waited within it. Lincoln could hear it's voice, ever beckoning him closer. calling for him, but he could almost hear a "when you're older..."

This was too much for the Riolu. His heart beat at his chest with the ferocity of a feral, a burning sensation erupting from the harsh beating. Lincoln felt like he would drop dead at any second. This was too much. This was too, too much. The over-whelming sensation was giving Lincoln a head rush. He took a step back from the beckoning silhouette, and then he turned around and ran. He ran and he ran, harder and faster than he ever had, trying to get far away from the perplexing forest. Lincoln could no longer deny he was terrified, and he had never been more terrified in his entire life. He ran without thinking about anything, without even thinking about breathing, until the trees thinned out and he reached the entrance. There, he passed out from the duress.

When Lincoln finally woke up that afternoon, the stepping stones were right in front of him, and the forest was behind. Everything leading up to his passing out was fuzzy, but the memory of standing in front of that... shrine was burned deep into Lincoln's memory. Remembering that eerie moment still filled him with dread, as if facing something far greater than him. Feeling his aura compared to that of the shrine, and how small he was compared to it... he wasn't sure how he was supposed to compete with that. He just got up and kept running. He made it across the stepping stones, and soon he was deep in the wilderness.

For a time, Lincoln only wandered, pushing the experience far out of his mind. It made him uncomfortable, the thought of that... overwhelming presence. Every time Lincoln was made to think about it... it made him sick. He couldn't face it. He lived with that for a while, but... it started to make him anxious. He started to feel like he shouldn't have been so afraid. As the memory dulled, Lincoln began to wonder why that aura had terrorized him so? He heard stories of other people approaching the shrine and coming back unscathed, o one day Lincoln decided he would return to the strange island and revisit his fear. Approaching the dungeon gave Lincoln a similar sense of wonderment, but when faced with the stepping stones his experiences and his wounds became fresh again and overwhelmed him. Lincoln tried a few more times to do this, and every time he was met with the same terror, the same result. He just couldn't get over that strange, pulsating aura....

In time, Lincoln heard tell of another dungeon; a strange mansion with a dubious air. It was regarded by many as "terrifying." Lincoln saw opportunity in this.

After obtaining a meal from a nearby shop, Lincoln began traveling to this mansion. Clearly, it had to be a bigger challenge than the strange island! If Lincoln could get through it, than surely the copse would no longer be a problem for him!! He was certain that the exploration and discovery of such a dubious manner would overwhelm and vanquish all those fears in his heart, by making them feel irrelevant.

When Lincoln finally arrived at the mansion, he instantly questioned his choices. The dubious aura he was hit with there was even stranger than the island's, and in an entirely different way. Still, Lincoln forced himself to approach, and with some procrastination, encouraged himself inside the establishment. Immediately, he regretted his decisions.
