Finding What's Left: Encyclopedia and Dictionary

Events:
The War of the Divine: The War of the Divine was the original conflict between Heaven and Hell which took place hundreds of years ago. Contrary to the belief of Christianity, the attack was not led by fallen angels, but rather the Seven Lords of Hell. The war dragged on for years, neither side able to pull ahead and soon it began to throw off the balance of the world. With a daring attack headed by Archangel Michael, the angels were able to push the demon armies back into Hell and out of the mortal world. Knowing that they had been defeated, Hell agreed to the terms of the Divine Treaty, a holy document that barred the use of magic in the mortal world and restricted demons from traveling to Earth. In exchange for these terms, Hell was allowed to continue its purpose and none of the Seven Lords were removed from power. With the signing of the treaty, many inhabitants of the mortal world relying on magic were forced into hiding. The treaty would come at a cost, as the angels themselves also used magic, and this left them in a position preventing them from being able to intervene in mortal affairs.  

The Second Divine War: In the year 2015, the second war between Heaven and Hell broke out. In a risky move, Hell broke the terms of the Divine Treaty and moved its forces into the mortal world. With the treaty now void, both sides were able to use magic in the mortal world once again, and the two bitter enemies clashed. Hell was able to gather many allies from species that had gone into hiding during the rise of humanity. As both afterlives met in battle, they held little regard for collateral damage and would decimate entire countries. Governments fell, entire human armies were slaughtered, and the human world would begin to spiral into anarchy. Heaven focused on trying to contain the demons flooding onto the Earth, but this strategy wouldn't work out for them very well. The war would finally climaxed with the Fall of Los Angeles, the single most destructive battle in human history. The 'City of Angels' was leveled by the intense fighting between angels and demons. After a week, less than one percent of the city's human population remained alive, and it would end with a total defeat of the 3rd Angelic Army, beginning a long and grueling retreat for the angels.


Species:
Demons: The resident species of Hell, demons come in all shapes and sizes, and are usually very vicious , though there are rare exceptions. They torture souls that have been sent to Hell for sins commited during life. Following the Second Divine War, many have been unable to return to their domain, and are wandering the Earth, slaughtering anything they come across. When a demon perishes, there is no afterlife for them, as they do not possess a soul, meaning their essence does not exist after death.

Angels: The guardians of Heaven, they resemble humans with large wings on their backs. Angels are proficient in many forms of magic and are capable of communicating with spirits in Heaven and the mortal world. Most are in the same situation as the demons, trapped on Earth, wandering the wasteland. They also are the same as demons in that they do not possess souls.

Reapers: The ones neutral between Heaven and Hell, the reapers are responsible for guiding spirits to Judgement, where it is decided what afterlife they shall be sent to. They have reflexes greater than an average human's and are capable live forever, but they are not invincible. A reaper can be killed by the same things humans are vulnerable to, such as disease, poison, weapons, etc. In appearance, reapers tend to resemble humans, but are notable for having bright, golden eyes, though there are exceptions to this. There are numerous reapers, many more than angels or demons, as they are needed all across the world, all the time. In both Divine Wars, the reapers stayed neutral, but many were killed by both sides of the war in the Second Divine War. Currently, the reapers' leadership has all but fallen apart with many reapers deserting their duties in the chaos of the war's end.
