» Personality:
Kestro is a confident young Cranidos. Proud of his strength and endurance that he's developed in his still relatively short life, the rock type is eager to show off his power to others. He can be quite bold in challenging others to spar with, and that pride and boldness of his can lead him into trouble. It wouldn't be uncommon to find Kestro pushing himself too far against someone or something he simply cannot win against. Some may call it braveness, others ignorant pride and stubbornness. That stubbornness doesn't just stop at physical confrontations either.
Kestro is hard pressed to admit when he's wrong, even when he himself knows it. He'll argue from dusk till dawn, quickly going into circles if he knows he's lost. It doesn't help that the young Cranidos is as blunt as his typing would suggest. He'll speak out when it's not his turn, insult someone without thinking of their feelings first, and generally act rude without meaning to.
That's not to say he's just a rough stone with sharp edges. Kestro is quick to apologize for his rudeness, and generally is not one to try and make enemies. He's quick to let past arguments go once they're over, and even switch sides if he knows he was wrong. Though it'd be a feat to get him to admit that he switched.
In some instances, Kestro may become quiet and distant. Normally this is when he's in deep focus or stressed. The entire world around him disappears except for whatever his mind is on, which can lead to disaster. On more than one occasion has a building been destroyed or the Cranidos injured himself while in this state. These normally don't last long, and a quick smack to get his attention can snap him back into reality if one isn't wanting to wait for him.
Otherwise, Kestro tends to be social, and enjoys listening to others' stories as much as recounting his own. He doesn't mind explaining his past or why he and his sister are being raised by a Lurantis. He is a bit hesitant to talk about his deceased sister, though, and tends to change the subject whenever he's pried for more information on why his parents acted the way they did.
» Likes:
Kestro enjoys sparring with other Pokemon however he can. Strength, endurance, speed; he enjoys testing his against anyone else's. However, one thing he normally doesn't attempt to spar with would be wits.
Kestro also, unsurprisingly, has a taste for desert-related foods. Meat covered in herbs and spices, teas and coffees made from native plants of Scorchfall, and particularly Cacnea Spikes, which he enjoys chewing on as a nice treat.
Kestro has found himself fond of cooling water, despite his typing. After arriving in Grassveil, when not being taught by his caretaker or interacting with other Pokemon, he commonly visits the nearby Small Pond to relax in the cool waters.
» Dislikes:
Kestro has a deep mistrust of Rampardos, despite them being his own evolution. The way his birth parents treated him and his siblings, or rather lack of treatment at all, has made him wary of the species. He's not opposed to becoming one himself, though there is the nagging thought of what evolution might do to him.
Kestro doesn't enjoy being in cold environments. Being raised in a desert and now adjusting to the milder climate of Grassveil, Kestro has yet to actually experience true cold such as within Icicle Woods, and he'd rather keep it that way.
Kestro possesses a nervous tick. Or, rather, click. Whenever nervous or stressed, he'll start to click his beak rapidly. He hates it to no bounds, and becomes increasingly embarrassed whenever it's pointed out to him.
» History:
Laid some fifteen or some years ago in a clutch of eggs, Kestro was one of only three eggs to hatch on a star filled Scorchfall night. His parents, a pair of Rampardos, soon led him and his two sisters out into the desert, abandoning the rest of the eggs to their fate. The three Cranidos would fall into line behind their hulking parents, never to see their unhatched siblings again. Later in his life, Kestro would wonder about their fates. Did they ever hatch? Or were they swallowed up by the sands or some lucky predator?
It didn’t matter much, as he and his sisters had one purpose in life for now: keeping up with their parents. Kestro’s parents did little in the way of protecting or raising their children. They were too focused on their work pulling wagons, carts, and sometimes just carrying items on their backs like pack mules. From oasis to oasis the Rampardos led their children. The trio had to learn how to survive and keep up on their own.
Months went by, and one of Kestro’s sisters had already fallen prey to the sands. As the two Cranidos attempted to help their dying sibling stand, their parents continued on, without a thought. Kestro and his sister cried out to their parents, but only found deaf ears from the larger Pokemon. However, the small caravan did stop.
The Cranidos looked on towards their parents, who made no attempt to turn back. Instead, from behind the silk sheets protecting their clients inside, an elderly Lurantis stepped out. She slowly walked through the burning sands towards the pair of Cranidos and their ailing sister. The two rock type looked up at the unfamiliar Pokemon, letting out small whines and clicks with their beaks as she knelt near their sibling. As one would suspect, it was too late for her, and the best the Lurantis could do is wrap the body in silk and keep her on the caravan to be buried later.
As the Cranidos fell in line behind their parents, the caravan trudged onwards into the dunes. A week later, the group arrived at a small oasis town within the desert. Upon arrival, Kestro, his sister, and the Lurantis went to bury and pay respects to his now deceased sibling. Soon afterwards, the Lurantis spoke with Kestro’s parents, and after a short negotiation, adopted the two surviving Cranidos.
This is where Kestro’s life truly began. Up until this point, he knew nothing and possessed nothing, not even a name. The Lurantis raised the pair as her own, giving them proper names and beginning to teach them about the world and themselves. Their days were spent learning, training, and aiding the elderly grass type in the chores around her home while the cooler nights they spent playing, resting, and anything else they wished.
Those days stretched out into weeks, months, and then years. Kestro had grown to love battling, and would often be seen sparring with other youngsters of the town. On more than one occasion he’d end up damaging property thanks to his species’ famously hard head. At the very least, dried mud and stone walls were easier to repair with the large amounts of rock and ground types who called the oasis home.
Sadly, the desert was still a harsh environment. A prolonged drought struck the oasis and the watering hole many of the inhabitants so desperately relied on dried up. Kestro and his sister’s adoptive Lurantis was especially hit hard. Her old age and rather specific needs caused her health to rapidly begin deteriorating. Not only her, but the village as a whole was soon being pushed to a crisis point.
As such, it was decided for the entire village to pack up and abandon the oasis for a more stable environment. They didn’t have long to decide on where, so the first choice of Grassveil was quickly agreed upon. Carts were loaded, buildings left standing to the mercy of the heat and wind, and Pokemon’s roles decided. Kestro and his sister personally took it upon themselves to pull the cart their caretaker and their belongings.
And thus, the long journey to the West began. The two Cranidos pulled together, doing what they could to keep up with the caravan. Days and nights melded together with the caravan barely stopping for a rest. Pokemon with healing abilities ran up and down, doing what they could to help those too ill or old to move on their own. Kestro barely even noticed the time going by, his mind set on reaching Grassveil and saving his caretaker. His sister didn’t fare so well, and soon had to join the cart with their caretaker. Even so, Kestro forced himself forward, relying on his sheer force of will to pull the cart forward.
Months later, the caravan arrived in the vibrant town of Grassveil. As the group broke apart to settle in, Kestro’s sister and caretaker were taken to be healed. The much milder environment of Grassveil did wonders on the sick, and most recovered without much incident. The Lurantis soon settled in herself, with Kestro and his sister joining her in one of the many new homes built for the newcomers.
