Energy and Groups

I have a question about the energy system that I couldn't quite get an answer out of in the rules: When a player makes a roll, does the deduction of energy apply to only that player's character, regardless of which players actually participate or initiate the encounter while in character?

The roll deducts from the person who rolled, as for encounters they're the pokemon you encounter while in character. You don't have to bring it out right away, but you must interact with it at some point before ending the thread. Most prefer battling as its a more exciting way to deal with an encounter, but you just have to have some kind of interaction with it, like helping it out with some task!
