Overconfidence

As she watched the crawling movement of a shadow without an apparent source, it occurred to Iji that this had been a bad idea.

She stomped the thought out of her mind as soon as it surfaced. She couldn't afford to wuss out on this, and the Hydro Pump curling through her claws was a comfort.

Her eyes darted through the dark undergrowth, her claws squelching through decaying plant matter as she moved between the trees. Sunlight scattered across her scales, filtered blue by the carpet of leaves somewhere far, far above.

She was going to get through this dungeon and back, and have something to show for it, or she'd be a lame golduck. It's forest, she thought, just like my old home. How bad could it be?

Zera had been watching the totodile make its climb up the tree and into the sky so they could see where to go. The hound had sat down, his head looking up with a bored expression as the totodile struggled up, only to turn around once it was ten feet off the ground. Its eyes widened, leaving Zera with a questioning look.

"Fire!" she had shouted. Zera blinked for a moment and looked behind him to see a brilliant yellow, orange, and red flame licking at the leaves on the ground and spreading. He did panic from the flames though, since he was a fire type himself. He got up and reached out a paw, slamming it on the ground in attempt to put out the flames.

He felt energy surge through him as the fire enveloped his paw, and his plan to squash the fire had failed as it began to grow quicker. He tried to slam the flames down with his paw and body, but his efforts were fruitless. He could not dig at the ground, since it would only throw up more leaves to catch fire, but his flailing had caused the leaves to spread out and begin to stick themselves to trees and bushes.

The hound would have been please by the sight, if this event did not have the chance of endangering his only way out of this forest. He growled in irritation and looked to the totodile, "Don't you know any water type attacks?" he snarled.

Iji jumped the last couple of feet, landing heavily. Her eyes darted around the blazing, smoking clearing as she tried to get her wind back. She muttered a stream of curses under her breath, rapidly gaining volume as the situation sunk in.

Finally, she turned to Zera. "I have one, but it's pretty strong and it's got a wide range." She rubbed at the back of her neck. "I don't know what level you are, but you might want to hide or something just in case. I don't really see anything else to do; this place'll go up like a torch if we don't do something quick."

"Don't ask me, just do it!" the houndour growled, diving into a bush and getting low so he would not get doused by the apparently powerful attack. He, however, had not noticed that the bush he had dived in was on fire, which led to the chance of him getting wet either way but at least the leaves would block out any damage from being done. The hound only just realized it when he began to feel himself being empowered by the flames once more. A normal houndour would have just been burned, but thanks to his Flash Fire ability, he was practically immune to the flames.

"Okay," Iji called nervously, as Zera dived for cover.

"Okay," she said again, more quietly, to herself this time. Closing her eyes, she called back the feeling of tension, of pressurized water pumping through her, looking for an escape. So much water that one devastating stream wouldn't be enough, it would roar in all directions, pulsing into the air with the shockwave force of the sea itself--

A blast of water tore through the air around her, spreading out in a circle for yards in each direction. When she opened her eyes, breathing heavily, she saw steam rising from charred leaves and bushes, all of them soaking wet some with branches bent and broken.

There were no flames in sight.

"Zera?" she called, trying to remember where he'd hidden. "I think I put it out."

Zera watched from within the bushes as the stream shot into the air and rained down upon them, soaking the area, and to his misfortune, him as well. The hound growled as the rain splashed down on him and soaked him and the bush.

When the reign of hydration ended, the houndour emerged from the bushes. He did not look the least bit pleased, "Fire's out, nearly put me out too.." he huffed. He looked around and saw the black marks on bushes, trees, and the ground that signaled where the fire had touched its marks of death and showed just how bad it would have gotten.

The hound gave a huff, "We better keep moving, the smoke from the flames would surely attract unwanted attention..."
