First topic message reminder :

energy:

Contrary to what most travelers inferred about him, Goro the Croagunk didn't actually hate travelers.

Having made his home deep in the dungeon of the Cattail Marsh, claiming an abandoned, rotting shack and a large stretch of the territory around it, Goro got precious little privacy, and he valued that more than almost anything else. Bearing in mind that passing through the Marsh was required to get to the infinitely more dangerous and resourceful Misty Mire, and taking into consideration that Dungeons were by nature difficult to traverse-- things like directions and time seemed to get distorted while inside-- he'd had more than a few visitors in his time here. Maintaining his stretch of swamp took a fair bit of work beating on feral Pokémon, so it was understandable that when he came across an explorer, merchant, or just a regular traveler wandering through his Marsh, he might be a little tense and jump to... unfortunate conclusions.

No one ever accused Goro of being smart.

But despite all that, Goro didn't hate other people. It was just when he found them in his metaphorical backyard that he tended to greet them fists swinging. Otherwise, he quite enjoyed sitting down across a campfire and trading stories or learning new things about the nearby settlements.

On a quiet aft'rnoon, like this? Prowling through the murky waters of the Marsh purposefully, Goro croaked quietly to himself, fingers drumming against his sides in a fit of boredom. I 'kin go with th' company.

Goro watched on with a visible sense of amusement as Clovis puffed up in response to his remark and lifted his head high. It was clear, now, that his ally was less... pompous, and more just a bit full of himself. Which wasn't so grating, honestly, considering that he had a lot to be proud of. The Croagunk couldn't help but admire Clovis' strength and abilities, being able to spew incredible amounts of water with such force, the ability to use Toxic despite being a Water-type, coupled with the powerful Ice-Beam that'd saved Goro's ass not once, but twice now. First, from blasting the Sliggoo out from under him while he drowned the great big beast, and right after when he froze the Poliwhirl alive. Normally finding such a Pokémon in his territory would get his blood boiling for a fight, but in this case, the Croagunk found that he didn't really want to try. Both because Clovis was indeed powerful, and he was surprisingly easy to get along with.

"Lemme grab a drink real quick - fightin' monsters is thirsty work." Even if he hadn't been in good shape, Goro would've been all for marching onward. Without any fanfare, the Croagunk turned on his heel and began marching in the direction of the small pond that the second Poliwhirl had erupted from, his steps relaxed and unhurried. Truthfully, he felt almost better than ever; Drain Punch all but healed most of his physical injuries, leaving him only with the satisfying aches that told of a day well spent fighting strong opponents. The grin on his face was carefree, his gaunt almost mellow as he approached the body of water, crouching down to inspect it.

His gaze was suspicious as he peered into the murky pond for a long, tense moment, before giving a convinced shrug of the shoulders. The Croagunk dunked his head into the pond, relishing in the feeling, taking deep, long gulps of water. He paid no attention to the foul, earthy twinge it had, focusing only on replenishing himself and getting back to fighting. However, his head submerged as it was, the Croagunk had no way of detecting the faint rippling in the center of the pond, the only visible clue of something lurking in the swampy waters. Something moving.

A drink? Ah yes, a drink! After all of the moving and the fighting, not much sounded more appealing than a big, cool cup of water, especially what with how much of his own water had been expulsed in the past few fights. Goro turned 'round, and Clovis followed, eager to get some water down his parched throat. The only question that remained was that of just where exactly any substantial amount of drinkable water could be found. There was an abundance of dirty, discolored water all around the marsh, of course, but diseases and a foul taste tainted nearly all of it. It seemed likely then, that Goro was returning to his home, wherever that was, or knew of some safe drinking stream nearby.

Strangely, Goro didn't walk for very long at all. He had only moved over to the body of water where one of the poliwhirl had appeared from earlier. As the croagunk stared out at the filthy pond, Clovis pondered just what exactly he had come over to it for. Looking out for more poliwhirl, I bet. That was a thing that happened with poliwhirl, right? They'd bring in reinforcements if their allies fell. Clovis gave the area a looking over, too. There was some miniscule rippling in the pond's center, but it probably wasn't anything worth his attention.

Suddenly, there was a dunk from beside the piplup, like an object being dropped into water. He turned, of course, towards Goro, the apparent source of the noise, who had dunked his head into the icky-looking swamp water!? Clovis sincerely hoped that he wasn't trying to drink from the pond. Even if he wasn't, the water was still too disgusting for Clovis to allow to croagunk to have his head in it. "Arceus, Goro! Get your head out of there." He commanded. If getting a drink was necessary, it would just have to be done somewhere else.

Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Beau Monde, Swamp Savage!   Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 EmptyWed Aug 23, 2017 11:47 pm

Goro heaved a relieved sigh, throwing his head back out of the water, relishing in the refreshing sense of hydration spreading through him. He'd heard Clovis' shout while his head was under, unable to discern what he was saying in specific; probably getting impatient and wanting to get back into the fray, if what he'd seen so far was consistent with the Piplup. He was just as excited about all this as Goro himself, which was impressive considering that the Croagunk considered battling his life calling. He plastered a satisfied grin on his face as he rose to his feet, brushing the mud off his knees absentmindedly.

He spared a glance at the Piplup off to the side, taking in the vaguely disgusted countenance of the Water-type with a general sense of bemusement. City-folk sure could be uptight, sometimes. He shook his head about absently, wiping the water from his face so as to clear his eyes, taking a step forward to rejoin his ally.

Until, of course, a giant, fist-sized clod of mud smashed into the side of his face, snapping Goro's head to the side, his entire body careening into the air at a truly impressive rate, the Croagunk smashing into the ground with all the painful obviousness of a super-effective attack striking a clean, surprise hit. He'd landed on his side, limbs splayed out stupidly in front of him, eyes shut in shocked agony - the Poison-type clearly caught completely flat-footed by the surprise attack. He could feel the pain spreading through him, deep beneath his skin and to his bones, and immediately knew that a Ground-type had its sights set on him. Or... something even stronger, with a Ground-type attack.

With a pained groan, Goro managed to lift his head from the ground, gazing in the direction that the Mud Shot had come from. Sure enough, in the middle of the pond he'd just stuck his head in, the head of a Whiscash peeked out from the waters, bobbing nonchalantly, the whiskers on the side of its face twitching furiously. It's small, beady eyes were narrowed in anger, glaring impressively at the fallen Croagunk. Goro rose a hand to hold to his face, where the feral's projectile had crashed into his head, fingers clutching tenderly at the splotch of hard mud leftover on his cheek. His expression immediately soured, features tightening in a clear show of outrage. He snarled in wordless fury, crawling off the ground and glaring murder right back at the catfish in the middle of the pond, his posture taut, on edge and radiating danger.

Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Beau Monde, Swamp Savage!   Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 EmptyTue Aug 29, 2017 12:46 am

Disgusting. Was drinking sickly liquids a normal thing for poison-types? Or was Goro just that foul of a pokémon? How desperate did someone have to be to drink from that? Feh! Clovis stood and stared at the croagunk, visibly a bit nauseated as he tried to imagine just what exactly swamp water would taste like. Goro didn't seem to mind drinking the water one bit. He probably didn't even realize what he'd done wrong, did he? He could've gotten better water from the poliwhirl.

Things went quiet for a moment, then, as Clovis took a moment to debate whether to call Goro out for being gross, or to never mention the incident again. What would he even say? The concept of sanitation seemed foreign to someone like Goro. But he didn't have to debate for very long. Out from the deepest parts of the pond, a muddy projectile flew right into the croagunk's face, sending him backwards through the air. Reflexively, the piplup jumped, turning his body towards the pond, where something fishy had made itself apparent. A whiscash, a big one, poked its catty head out of the water, floating in place, and staring at the downed frog with its weird whiskered face. What was this catfish's problem, huh? They hadn't even approached the big moist bastard!

Clovis couldn't help but realize, as Goro stood himself back up, that he probably ought to do something so long as the whiscash was just floating still. Judging by the look on his face, Goro was quite mad. Clovis could probably understand why. Finally getting into the swing of things, the piplup jogged off to the right, circling the pond a bit, so as to ensure that the whiscash would have to worry about two different directions. Still moving, he shot off a single ice beam within the general direction of his opponent. It was neither a particularly well-aimed attack, nor a very effort-intensive one, but an icy beam landing near the whiskered pokémon ought to, if nothing else, cause it to focus on something other than the croagunk.

PostSubject: Re: Beau Monde, Swamp Savage!   Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 EmptyTue Aug 29, 2017 6:19 pm

Goro stared hatefully at the Whiscash floating in the middle of the pond, glaring back at the furious beady eyes of the catfish. What an awful opponent; how was he supposed to fight a Pokémon in the water? And a fish, at that? There would be no exchange of punches or physical struggle. Hell, the little shit held a distinct advantage over him, what with its super-effective typing and ability to swim. If he went in after the Water-type, he'd get peppered with more projectile than he'd know what to do with, to say nothing if he actually got close to the big bastard. The hulking Whiscash could probably drown him if he was dumb enough to chase after it.

As much as he wanted to kill the thing for the sneak-attack, there wasn't much he could do. If he tried hard enough, he might be able to let loose a barrage of Poison Stings and maybe poison it, but there wouldn't be any satisfaction in that. No, he wanted the beast to suffer. Goro huffed angrily, fists curling almost painfully tight, the Croagunk at a loss as to how to combat this particular opponent. He was about to turn away from the wild Pokémon before an icy beam lanced into the waters, glancing the right side of the Whiscash that had been paying attention only to Goro - Clovis had entered the fray. The beast seemed more shocked than hurt at the blow, faltering only a moment before dunking underwater, surfacing again a few paces away from before, further from Clovis.

It seemed they had the same idea, then. Only the Piplup would be much better at this particular tactic than Goro - he only had one projectile to offer, and while there was a chance he could poison his enemy, it wasn't particularly powerful. Still, he'd contribute where he could, and see if he couldn't get the catfish somewhere closer to land, where he could haul it out the water. Goro rose his hand in front of him, fingers pointed at the Whiscash carefully and purposefully. He flexed the veins in his wrist powerfully, just before an array of toxic poison needles burst from his fingertips, rocketing in the Whiscash's direction and prompting the feral to veer off to the side to evade the attack, swimming a bit closer to shore than before.

"Herd 'em closer!" Goro let loose another spray of Poison Sting, a series of toxic-looking needles firing from his fingers, landing in the water dangerously close to the Whiscash with a noisy plop. It managed to sway just out of the way again, showing a fluid swiftness that betrayed its hulking size. If they focused fire on the beast, then they'd sooner or later something would hit.

Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Beau Monde, Swamp Savage!   Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 EmptyThu Sep 07, 2017 2:43 am

In this case, the strategy didn't seem too hard to figure out. Though the whiscash was in water and held the advantage of being the only combatant capable of breathing underwater, it was also limited by this fact in the areas that it could in fight effectively- for the fish to try and leave the pond was a ridiculous notion. As Clovis and Goro were on the outside of the pond, they could encircle it without issue, and make sure that it had to focus on two sides at once. Simple enough, assuming Goro had any ranged attacks. Come to think of it, maybe that wasn't such a wise assumption to make, considering what Clovis had seen in previous battles...

The whiscash, having been narrowly struck with Clovis' ice beam, retreated a little ways away, perhaps seeking to avoid further attacks and to reposition itself, granting Clovis plenty of time to stand back and observe his ally, who indeed, possessed at least one ranged attack, in the form of small needles that flew from his fingertips. This first array missed, sadly, as did the second, but some of the little pointy projectiles seemed to have gotten pretty close to it, even as the whiscash swam about in the water, dodging as best it could. Apart from the little needle attacks, Goro also gave something of a command, "Herd 'em closer!" The croagunk was more of a close range combatant, wasn't he? Either way, if it meant that the big fish would be farther away from Clovis, then all the better for both of them. After a few steps of repositioning, the piplup took aim slightly short of the whiscash, and shot an ice beam, which dissolved harmlessly in the water near the fish, requiring very little movement to avoid- but movement that required the whiscash to move, just a bit, towards Goro's position on the other side of the pond.

Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Beau Monde, Swamp Savage!   Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 EmptySun Sep 10, 2017 1:21 am

The frustration and anger that bubbled up within Goro after his Poison Sting attack missed didn't last long - as usual, Clovis followed right up with an icy lance of power, herding the Whiscash closer and closer to Goro's position. Truth be told, he didn't know what exactly he was going to do once the catfish Pokémon neared his position close enough for him to do something, and it seemed that was coming dangerously close to happening. In the back of his mind, he knew it was probably a bad idea to get physical with a giant fish in the middle of a pond, considering he barely knew how to not drown, but what was the alternative? Pepper the big bastard with Poison Stings and wait for it to succumb to poisoning?

No, to hell with all that. The fish had blindsided Goro, blasted him with a Ground-type move in a surprise attack for no real reason. Sure, he'd drunk from the Whiscash's pond, but this fucking swamp was his. Goro had a right to all the water he wanted, and if this catfish had something to say about it, then it was his humble duty to teach the Whiskers Pokémon why, exactly, it was wrong. Very physically and very painfully. That was his excuse if anyone asked. Perhaps more honestly, he just wanted revenge on the fish for the cheap shot.

The thought warmed him, some, while his eyes carefully tracked the trajectory of his aquatic foe. Clovis' Ice Beam caused it to have to veer pretty hard to the right, coincidentally toward Goro. Any thoughts of strategic tactics vanished from his mind as it dawned on the Croagunk what sort of opportunity this really was - the Whiscash was in Goro's range. For a Poison Sting, sure, but that's not what was going to happen. A stupid look of determination and hatred washed over Goro's features and he rushed forward bodily, bending his arms back at his hips and crouching very low to the ground once he neared the end of the dry soil in front of the pond. The Croagunk's head was well and truly empty of any thought as he pressed against the ground - hard - bodily leaping forward into the pond.

Perhaps Goro looked at home, in that moment. A frog leaping into the pond, soaring through the air for one stupid, baffling moment before he hit his airborne peak, his trajectory plummeting. The Croagunk threw his arms forward purposefully as he came closer to the water, toward the Whiscash, his legs flying uselessly in the air behind him. Be it from surprise or bewilderment, the catfish actually stood still long enough for him to get close, and Goro landed on the Water-type bodily, wrapping his arms around the fish instinctively as they splashed into the water. The Whiscash's body was slick, wet, and slimy, its scales rubbery, and the frog nearly slipped right off the fish.

Immediately, Goro realized what a stupid idea he'd had. As soon as the Whiscash understood what happened, its body began thrashing and writhing powerfully, cleaving through the water with nearly no resistance. Still, Goro was wrapped around the great catfish, practically riding it, and it seemed impossible for the Whiscash to strike him or attack him any other way. Instead, it seemed to be trying to throw the Croagunk off of it. It was truly a struggle to keep hold of his enemy, but somehow Goro managed it, squeezing the Whiscash half out of self-preservation and frustrated anger. Despite the predicament he'd made for himself, Goro's head was full of hatred and fire and rage. Righteous tension surged through his limbs as he was thrashed around in the water on the back of the catfish, squeezing the beast for all he was worth. There was no plan or tactic at play, no strategy being employed, just a desperate, wrathful physical struggle between two wild Pokémon.

Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Beau Monde, Swamp Savage!   Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 EmptySat Sep 16, 2017 10:18 pm

Clovis' "attack" had missed, and it had missed in just about the way that it was supposed to. The whiscash moved out of the way of the ice beam, in such a direction that its movement resulted in the fish becoming closer to Goro than it had been before. After this lovely strategic move, Goro was close enough to... not miss with his little projectiles? In hindsight, Clovis had forgotten as to just why exactly Goro being closer to the fish was a good thing. It'd be facing a lot more pressure if both Clovis and Goro were of equal distance from it, and were able to deliver their ranged attacks with consistency. Even from across the pond, Goro's anger was quite visible. Perhaps he wanted the fish to see his face before he put it down?

It was certain, then, that the fish saw Goro's face when, spontaneously, the croagunk performed a mighty frog-leap directly towards the whiscash, soaring a good many feet, before landing atop the creature, and clinging onto it, presumably for dear life, as the whiscash began flopping and thrashing and spinning in an effort to get the seriously determined frog off of its back.

All the while, a piplup looked on in shock- horror, even, as his companion wrestled about with a fish, in water, like a maniac! Clovis had no idea what he could do, similarly to how Goro probably had no idea as to what he was doing. The piplup had a clear line of sight, and could observe just fine, but any one of his ranged attacks was, of course, just as likely to hit the frog as it was the fish. Poison was an option, and it probably wouldn't affect Goro at all, but it was an incredibly slow option, that would not immediately stop the whiscash from struggling with the croagunk. A good three of his moves were eliminated then, not to mention the other absurd option of trying to punch the fish. So, what was left? Process of elimination lead him to a single conclusion, a method that would, if he was lucky, grab the whiscash's attention then and there.

With a brief run closer to the whiscash's hearing range, Clovis opened his beak and said a few words that, while the whiscash definitely did not understand the meaning of, it would hopefully receive an attractive message from. "Hey. Heeeeeeey, pretty fishy! I'm over here, look at meeeeeee!" He wiggled his hips for added effect.

...

Sweet Arceus, Goro heard that too, didn't he?

Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Beau Monde, Swamp Savage!   Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 EmptyMon Sep 18, 2017 2:09 am

Goro had never met a fish that was so strong. If one wanted to be technical, Goro hadn't met many fish, but the point was that this fucking catfish was giving the Croagunk a run for his money. His fists clenched against each other tightly, Goro's arms and legs wrapped around the great catfish and squeezing for all he was worth, but it seemed all for naught. The Whiscash thrashed this way and that, moving incredibly swiftly in the water as if there was no resistance at all for the Water-type. The strength of its movements was to be noted, as well; great, bulging muscles struggled against the frog Pokémon, and it seemed only a matter of time before Goro would be thrown off the Whiscash.

And then what? It was obvious that at that point he'd be extremely vulnerable to whatever manner of punishment that the Whiscash had in mind; this idea of his seemed incredibly shortsighted, in hindsight. Still, in for a penny, in for a pound. There was no point in not committing at this point, so Goro grit his teeth and struggled to inhale what little air he could when the Whiscash splashed above water, doing his best to wear his enemy down. Unfortunately, his efforts seemed to be for naught. With a particularly powerful Thrash, Goro's hold on the Whiscash slipped, and a mighty strike from its tail sent Goro splashing into the water to the side, the wild catfish finally having rid itself of the frog on its back.

Desperately, Goro tried to stay afloat, only managing to keep his head above water as the Whiscash reared itself up and stared down at him. Panic, fear, anger and all sorts of emotions clouded his mind, and he knew that he was at his enemy's mercy. Only his enemy was a wild Pokémon, and they usually had no mercy to give. Bitterly, the Croagunk clenched his eyes shut and turned his head to the side as he paddled desperately to stay afloat, waiting for the Whiscash's first strike.

... Only, it never came. Instead of a mighty roar of water surging his way, Goro heard only Clovis' voice. The Piplup's tone was high and tittering and had the Croagunk been looking at his companion, he would have double-taken at the sight of the normally composed and regal Water-type wiggling his hips for the catfish in the pond. Still, his words seemed to have some effect, as when Goro finally braved a look up at his enemy, there was none to be found. Instead, the Whiscash had spun around on the spot and swam desperately toward the Penguin Pokémon at the bank of the pond. For a moment, it was all Goro could do was stare stupidly at the sight, before he remembered himself and swam desperately in a different direction, heaving with great strokes to get himself to land as quickly as possible.

He met his destination quickly, and the Croagunk wasted no time in wrestling himself onto dry land and scrambling to his feet. The fighter had gotten in over his head there, and once again he was saved by the talents of his companion. Hurriedly, Goro made his way to Clovis and the Whiscash that was cirling the pond in front of the Piplup, unsure of how he could fight in such a situation but eager to try anyway.

Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Beau Monde, Swamp Savage!   Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 EmptyTue Sep 26, 2017 2:29 am

It was a well-timed intervention, that little bit of attract business. It seemed to be the case that the whiscash had been drawn over almost immediately after it had tossed Goro into the water, preventing the croagunk from having to take any follow-up attacks that the fish would have otherwise thrown at him. Goro kept afloat with his unskilled paddling for a bit, before making his way over to pond's shore. With that, the situation was... fixed? The whiscash didn't seem to be acting very aggressively anymore. It- or rather, she, just circled harmlessly around in the water near the piplup, more than likely seeking his attention after the attractive maneuver he had pulled off earlier. To think that it would really be quite so easy to subdue! So long as the illusion of friendliness was maintained, there probably wouldn't be any more more issues with the fish. This was a sort of victory, wasn't it?

Quickly after reaching dry land, Goro rushed over to the piplup. Or to the whiscash. Doing one of the two accomplished the other, really. Clovis took his attention away from the infatuated fish, and looked at his companion, more than a little bit hopeful that he wouldn't press too hard as to the specifics of what technique he had just used. "Goro-Goro!" Clovis called, intentionally ignorant of whatever mood the croagunk showed on his face. "It might do you well to avoid being a reverse-fish-out-of-water." He gave the circling whiscash a glance, and uttered a few dull hums at it, as if to keep it from getting too bored and reigniting a hatred towards the croagunk. This wasn't such a bad situation. Simply walking away was clearly a possibility at that point.

PostSubject: Re: Beau Monde, Swamp Savage!   Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 EmptyTue Sep 26, 2017 3:08 pm

As Goro neared his companion, he felt his spirits soar. The Whiscash was now stupidy swirling around the water in a circular fashion, somehow bewitched by whatever trick Clovis had up his sleeve this time. His hands found his knees and the Croagunk bent over, struggling to catch his breath after such a struggle. He had not expected the catfish to put up that big of a fight, even despite the impressive power of its Ground-type attack. Perhaps it was his own arrogance and short-sightedness speaking, but he really had hoped to take the Water-type down in its own pond. It'd be a biting enough insult to make up for the sneak-attack it had gotten on him - simply winning wouldn't be enough to satisfy him. Not after a cheap shot like that. Thankfully, though, it seemed Clovis had another great idea.

"Yer... yer right... Instead o' fightin' the fish in the water... we need to get it out of the water! What kinda fish can fight on dry land!" What a brilliant idea. The Whiscash had many advantages in the pond, able to swim veritable circles around the Croagunk clinging to it. But if they could somehow tempt the beast into crawling onto dry land, then it would all be smooth sailing from there. Why, Goro could even pay back the favor and clobber the hell out of it, instead of getting thrashed around in the pond. Animatedly, the Croagunk pulled himself up from his half-crouch, his arms waving into the air excitedly. He turned around to take in the catfish once more, observing the Whiskers Pokémon as it harmlessly vied for the Piplup's attention. "Clovis, yer a genius!

"Ya reckon we can get the big bastard out of there somehow?" Truthfully, even once it was on dry land, the Whiscash would still put up a fight. It only made sense for it to be able to launch those Mud Shots and thrash around like the great wild beast it was. Plus whatever kind of moves it hadn't shown yet - despite his rage at the feral Pokémon, Goro felt the first tidings of excitement rise up in him again. Maybe it would make for a good opponent like the Poliwhirls did. If it could genuinely challenge the two explorers like the Tadpole Pokémon did, then maybe it'd even be worth the cheap shot at the start.

Beau Monde, Swamp Savage! - Page 5 Empty

"Get the fish out of the... what?" Clovis blinked, bewildered at his companion's interpretation. Was that something that Goro thought was a good idea? Did he really want to fight the fish quite so much? Getting the whiscash to leap out of its habitat was of course an interesting idea, but Clovis had never meant to imply that it was something he wanted to do! Still, Goro really seemed to be fond of the notion. The croagunk straightened his posture and threw his arms up towards the heavens, giving the weird fish a look over before tossing a compliment the piplup's way. A genius! Sure, the statement about fish-out-of-water might have been said with some more facetious motives than Goro seemed aware of, but if he really thought that it was such a good idea, then...

Getting the whiscash out of the water, even if it was relatively docile at the moment, would take a hefty degree of creativity. Creativity that was, frankly, lost on Clovis. The whiscash wouldn't understand a command to exit the water, obviously, and there didn't seem to be anything with which to lure it out. He took a step back, and observed as the fish nudged its whiskers lightly along the edge of the pond. Clovis didn't have much in the way of ideas besides the simple solution of just leaving, but Goro was itching for a fight, and who would Clovis be to deny him one? "Not sure that's very likely, unless you happen to be carrying a big plate of steamed shellder that'll convince it to come out." One potential line of thought could be convincing the whiscash to approach Clovis with yet another attractive display, but... Nuh-uh. Not while Goro's looking.

Distractedly, Goro kept throwing glances toward the Whiscash still in the pond, swimming around harmlessly for Clovis' attention. The impotent rage that had overcome him after the catfish's sneak attack had faded somewhat, leaving only his eagerness and excitement for the battle at hand, which was curiously at a pause. There was no way to fight the beast when it was in the water, as he'd just tried, and damn near died for it. Had it not been for Clovis and his quick thinking (and his strange technique) then Goro had a strong suspicion that he'd be swimming with the fishes right around now - literally. Instead, he stood up on the high bank looking down on the same fish that had bucked him moments earlier, trying to formulate some way to get the creature on dry land, where he would not be at a gross disadvantage.

Frustratingly enough, Clovis had no answer for the conundrum. Goro had simply figured that the Piplup could do more of what he had already done, and bring it out, but if the penguin in question hadn't thought of it by now then it might not be possible. Still, it wouldn't hurt to ask. "Yer sure ya can't just lure it out, the way you did just now?" The Croagunk took a moment to inspect the infatuated fish below, taking in its innocently bashful mannerisms. He had no idea how a catfish managed to look bashful, but there you have it. It circled around in the water flashily, hoping to catch the Piplup's eye. There were a number of low slopes in the bank as it went down, so it wasn't as if Clovis couldn't manage it. "He seems pretty taken with ya."

Oh, dear. Goro was quite a bit more observant than he might have looked. Indeed, for Clovis to attract the fish was an entirely conceivable and legitimate method; it might even have been the best method available. But it was a bit of a weird method, and almost degrading to go shaking his hips at some dumb whiscash that couldn't even understand what he was saying. Clovis gave the whiskered pokémon a look as it swam about in circles, performing little moves in the water and returning its stare right back at the piplup. Goro was right, the fishy did seem to be quite enamored with Clovis. Who could blame it? Clovis did regard himself as a charming 'mon, it was understandable that the whiscash, even as a feral, would find some appreciation for the piplup's qualities. It was a little endearing, actually, seeing it in the water, occasionally flashing what looked like smiles with its big, goofy mouth.

"I don't know, Goro. Convincing it to leave the water like that would mean having it get out of there on its own terms. Arceus only knows what it would try and do, if it leaped out of the water in its crazed state at me, and me alone!" Clovis gave a number of glances over at the whiscash as he spoke. "That fish is much better off in its pond, not scrambling up to the shore after someone like me." He took a step back from the water, and gestured, ever so subtly, for the whiscash to follow. "Yeah, that whiskered fishy over there. Pretty whiskers, pretty whiskers..."

"Don't sweat it, partner! I'll put it down before it knows what hit it." For all that Goro had failed in his underwater struggle against the Whiscash, he was the epitome of confidence now. After all, it wasn't as if a fish could fight on land, was it? As soon as Clovis lured it up out of the water and onto land a ways, then Goro could take over from there and have himself a good time. After that, there was no speaking of what the rest of their little excursion could bring them. The possibilities were endless! "I owe it one for that sucker punch, and it's real keen on gettin' to know ya. We got everythin' we need to take care o' this problem.

"You got 'em, right in hand. I'll be right here, so don't you worry none about this big fish jumpin' at ya." Indeed, he'd love the opportunity to fight in on fair ground. As Clovis took a step back from the water, apparently beginning to acquiesce to his request, Goro made it a point to stay behind the piplup, but still relatively close by in case he needed to be there. The Croagunk didn't imagine that Clovis would actually get jumped by the creature, as so far he'd proven to be a very able combatant during their battles, but he was displaying a certain unwillingness to tangle with this fish. Perhaps it was because the option of walking away was so easy, but it just didn't sit right with Goro.

Fortunately, it seemed the Whiscash was willing to play ball. It must have seen something in Clovis that Goro didn't catch, because at some unseen signal it went veritably buck-wild in the water, splashing furiously this way and that way. It was only so excited for a few moments before it mastered itself - barely - and when it did so, a blissful and eager smile was pasted on the catfish's mug. It swam forward expertly until it met resistance against the low bank; clearly, it didn't quite recognize that the piplup wanted it up onto dry land. Instead, its eager expression died down a little as Clovis retreated slightly, a note of panic flashing in its eyes.
