the
SERENE CAVE

-------------------------------------------------

A large cave, eh? The brutish Charmander examined a thin piece of crinkled and abused paper that displayed quite the imposing figure on it: some cat freak that was stated to be purple. Ares supported his lower jaw with his index finger and thumb as his brow was furrowed in deep contemplation, his pupils darting from left to right as he read in full detail what the scrap had to say. Admittedly, his handwriting wasn't the best - as he had been reduced to making notes based off of overhearing a particularly loud conversation - but he could at least retain some information about the whole procedure. Go into a cave, beat up this psychedelic feline, then get the heck out of there without getting lost for all eternity. Easy enough, or at least that's what his notes told him.

He would shrug as he balled up the parchment and stuffed it back into his bandana, his eyes rolling slightly as he sought to undermine the difficulty of this particular task. It was habit that he should ignore the hardships in favor of the loot at the end, but this might prove more difficult than he would imagine. Before him was the gaping mouth of a particular lonely looking cave, and it seemed to breathe with a sort of asthmatic rumble as the wind blew in and out of it. It was dark as the cave descended deeper into the ground - that much was a guarantee - but it would be no issue for his trusty tail flame and thinking lots of curse words.

Ares scratched at his upper neck and chin, seeking to dissipate some of the uncertainty that he had about the whole process. This shouldn't end too terribly right?

There was something magnificent about riding a beast constructed from earth and boulders that made Ares feel a rush, despite his wounded state. This was an experience not many got: how often could once claim that they were granted the ability to sit upon the stones that constituted an Onix? The lizard was not in a state to truly appreciate his luck, but there was some brush of it that resonated deep within him. Needless to say, he would be remembering this encounter.

The brightness of the sun poked greedily at his eyes as his gaze narrowed slightly. Was the day always this bright? He could hardly fathom why he had not taken the time to notice how dark that cave was - but then again, wherever he went, he was not without a light source. A small shiver shook his body as he was nestled into the soft earth, his body weak and malleable to the others' wills. There wasn't much he could do in this condition, and thus he allowed himself to be subjected to these caretakers while he brooded about his failed attempt at Mewtwo's glory.

Without the imminent threat of death, he'd become lost in a fog, a tangle of sharp sensations and colors he couldn't always recognize. Mrs. Stella's voice sounded far away; Cyrus freezes, blinking owlishly up at her as his stress-addled mind staggers to assign meaning to her words.

South-East. Find the pond. Find the moss. Get the water. Save Ares. Find pond. Find moss. Get water. Save Ares. Pond. Moss. Water. Ares. Save. Ares. Save. Family.

A few agonizing seconds pass before what he's supposed to be doing finally clicks, sending him half-slithering down the mountainside towards the direction of the pond. It was hard to tell where he was going in his dream-like state, limited to simple commands to tell him where to go, like some primitive, remote-controlled robot-

Cyrus cried out as he stumbled on an awkward, gnarled root, slamming him into the mulchy forest floor. He was too worked up. Freaking out wasn't going to help anyone if he kept tripping over himself. He forced his breath to steady, counting down from ten as he usually did in situations where he could feel himself losing control. He'd dealt with missions before, so why was this one so hard? Because they'd just fought a legendary? Because he'd come so close to losing everything he'd rebuilt his identity around?

It felt like the weight of the world was on his shoulders. He should be better at this by now.

He looks so dazed, and she feels so guilty. Yet she tells herself Cyrus is in no shape to watch over Ares in his overwhelmed state, and a preoccupied activity with the goal of saving the Charmander's life will give him a minute to recollect himself. In the meantime, she curls herself around just a little more about the Charmander. She glances this way and that, uttering things to herself within Ares's hearing range.

"Let's see now.........things Unak would use...........can't just forget now, too important..........ah.....Comfrey........Yarrow...............some lavender, yes, can't forget......Bother, there was a five flower one.....Think, you daft old snake, think!"

It seems she's listing off some medicines she could use to help treat the wound, and all the while she looks this way and that, or too the sky, as if hoping some of the plants she describes will magically land on her head out of nowhere. The name 'Unak' comes out as if speaking to someone she knew well, but certainly nobody the old Onix had been seen with. Rather, Mrs. Stella supposedly came to Grassveil with nothing but the shawl around her neck, and very much by herself.

Mrs. Stella doesn't seem like the one to keep secrets, either.

Another thought occurs to her in the middle of her herbal listing -- if Ares should slip into unconsciousness, they might risk losing him then and there. She didn't check if they made it out with any items, or if they left them back in the cave ( in that case, any Oran Berries were lost forever and there was nothing that could be done ) but she doesn't want to leave Ares's side. So, she tries to keep him awake through concentration on communication.

"....Ares, dear, while we wait for your friend, we should...assess...the gravity of the injury. If it hurts you to talk, don't you try to stress yourself, just shake or nod your head. Now, is the wound still bleeding? I can tear up a patch of grass for you, you know. It shan't be any bandage, but it's certainly a better cover for a bloody wound then a dusty and dirty claw -- you'll increase the risk of infection that way."

His gaze, slightly unfocused, was shifted towards the Onix that towered above him. She was so imposing with that size - had she always seemed that big? Perhaps it was his own diminished state that left him feeling small and tiny - after all, he felt quite demoralized by how it appeared he was nothing but a coward for not dying in the heat of the fray like a good little Charmander of his tribe should.

He would be shunned for such actions, and not given the opportunity to repent and purge his own weakness. His parents would be branded as producing bad genes that yielded a coward like him, and he was uncertain if their future would be as sound as it used to be. Some voice was coming to him, and it was as distant as a person yelling from a far off mountain peak. He blinked slowly, and brought Mrs. Stella into focus - as blurry as that focus might be.

He would give a nod, then another nod, and gestured gently towards the oozing, bloody wound that gaped upon his shoulder. He hadn't even seen it in the light yet, and Ares figured it would not be best if he did.

True, he may be a coward to his homeland, but this was not his native grounds. And in this strange land he was considered brave by those around him for even attempting to fight, and strong for surviving such an attack for so long. If the situation wasn't so urgent And she could hear his thoughts, the Onix would surely scold him for thinking so harshly of himself.

But instead, she finds the longest and cleanest blades of grass, seizes them in her jaws, and tears them with expertise from the scalp of the earth. For a beast so huge with such a hard body, who not even a half hour ago sought to maul another living being, she had one of the most gentle touches when she tried. Softly, carefully, she nudges his claw away from the wound, and puts the grass on top of. She pats it delicately into an unground poultice of sorts with her chin, minding his pain tolerance from pressure.

"--There." She announces in a hushed voice, that of a reassuring mother. "That'll do until Cyrus gets back. Mind your claws, or you'll get it dirty. We'll be sure to find some herbs partial to healing such dreadful gashes. Does that soubd good?"

PostSubject: Re: Caves Are Scary   Caves Are Scary - Page 3 EmptyFri Apr 08, 2016 3:50 am

There was a slight wince - a cliche, really, as all strong men seem to wince and flinch as a woman tends to their wounds - before the Charmander nestled back down into his designated waiting area. He gave a sigh as his body, tight and rigid as it began its recovery process, sought to smooth out the constricted muscles. He held his unsteady gaze towards Mrs. Stella as she withdrew her enormous skull made of rock and stone from his smaller body, and there was a look of some fashion of peace as the feeling of leaking subsided. If he could have, he would have given this old matriarch a very faint touch in thanks; however, he resigned himself to being nothing more than a lump to be nurtured and cared for.

His claws curled as she told him to keep them from the wound location, and he willingly obliged. This was not only because wanted to, but he felt like he lacked the strength to even lift his arms or move any part of his body too vigorously. This certainly was the burden of being a lump of flesh that could not bravely face oblivion. He nodded in response to her inquiries, and, quite surprisingly, he felt at peace.

It was not the peace he had experienced when he had met that Shuppet in the woods, or the peace and carefree air that he had when he and Cyrus journeyed through the same woodlands, but it was certainly much better than feeling like every breath was expelling blood out of his gaping wound.

It was surreal, alien, really, how even though the trio had just experienced such horror and panic from the events in that blasted cave, how the sun could still shine in all its glory and the grass could be its finest shade of green, how the trees could still stand tall and the flowers be in full bloom.

It was beautiful, but the beauty was lost on the anxious Onix. Though she was grateful the grass gave Ares a twinge of relief, his weakened state sent her stomach into somersault. She calms herself and tries to keep him awake by making what she believes is reassuring conversation.

She says more to herself then him that he'll be okay, they'll clean and patch the wound, get back to Grassveil, and look for proper help if they can. That he was brave and that she'd be forever in his debt for her own actions, so on and so forth.

All the while she keeps eye for Cyrus, hoping the Servine won't be much longer.

PostSubject: Re: Caves Are Scary   Caves Are Scary - Page 3 EmptySat Apr 09, 2016 1:43 am

And so the world spun on, and Ares was humbled that he was of no importance to its turning. When he should surrender himself to the soil, he would not be missed nor would his name be mentioned again. No book would record his exploits, and no bard would sing songs of his exploits. How truly a dark thought: no matter how much he considered that he mattered and no matter how well his friends regarded him, he would inevitably be damned to be an unremembered creature that had fallen so that he might build the foundation of something greater. He would rather be at the pinnacle than at the bottom.

Perhaps he should yield himself to that inner urge to grow and mutate, to present his strength so that he might inspire and coerce his fellows into yielding to their own inner beasts? It seemed such a lovely prospect - perhaps he could grow stronger still. His hands curled into loose, weak fists, and he attempted to seek out that creature within so that he might beckon it to his aid. His eyes closed, and he forced himself into some semblance of calm so that he might tempt the creature forth.

This had been his dream, right? To evolve into something, and grow stronger.

When Cyrus finally returns, it's clinging to arm-fulls of moss like a lifeline. The tremors in his hands is persistent, but not nearly as violent as they had been before. He shuffles to his fallen comrade's side, arching his entire body so that his chest clamps down on top of the moss, his brain repeating a silent mantra of "I'm won't lose him, I won't lose him," the whole way.

The Servine lays the product of his scavenging in a pile beside the two, carefully sitting beside Ares. His stomach knots his comrade's pitiful state. Ares is supposed to be the strong one of the group - he's not supposed to be hurt. He's not supposed to look like death.

Cyrus has to stop himself from taking hold of the Charmander's curled hand. He's not sure if the urge comes from wanting to reassure Ares, or himself, but Ares is so fragile, and knowing him... The Servine snorts. It'd probably just piss him off.

He can't bring himself to look Mrs. Stella in the eye.

Seeing the Servine appear through the trees is like a vision of salvation. She breathes deeply. She wasn't sure how much longer she could use conversation to keep Ares awake, but now she has little need to. She goes as far as to extend her neck out to greet him, blessing the Servine's lucky stars and thanking him for what he's doing--

--Except he doesn't look at her.

She remembers, in a flash, as the cave came crashing about them, a look of horror, a look mistrust, in the Servine's eyes. He was scared of her. He didn't trust her after her violent outbreak with seemingly no excuse, even though she has a most serious reason for her behavior. She wants to say something, for she can't bear this clear rift widening like a yawning maw between them, but she knows it's not the time. Not with Ares's life as the most important matter at hand.

But she worries that when the time will be right, it will be too late to apologize. Too late to at least let him know why she did what she did in that cave, even if Cyrus, even if Ares would never trust her again and avoid her at all cost. It was fair for these innocent Pokemon, who were victims of the cruelty of life and circumstance -- like her -- to receive some kind of closure from this rotten experience that would scar their hearts and scar their brains.

She hopes, at least, he'll listen to her when it comes to the matter of saving a Pokemon he did care for.

"Cyrus, I'm too large to do this properly, so if you can, I'm going to trust you to clean out Ares's wound. It's simple, really. You just gently remove the grass that's on the cut now, then very, VERY carefully and very gently dab and soak the moss into the wound. Best to clean around it, too, to bring chances of dirt to an absolute minimum, don't you know."

PostSubject: Re: Caves Are Scary   Caves Are Scary - Page 3 EmptyTue Apr 12, 2016 8:22 pm

There was a lot for Ares to take in as he felt himself sink deeper into the ground he was splayed upon, and it seemed that someone else had arrived to assess the damage that had been inflicted upon his weak frame. He turned his head to gaze towards that green blur that was most likely Cyrus, and the muscles around his eyes relaxed ever so slightly so that he might look peacefully towards him. The faintest smile curled the corners of his lips upwards, and, although it took too much of his little energy to speak, he would do his best to make it known that he was grateful for Cyrus's presence. This bear of a creature was now regressing ever so slightly into a more cuddly form: from feral to teddy.

Ares seemed to meditate deep with himself so that he might find where this dormant power - the key to progressing to his next and ultimate stage lie presented before him, wrapped in weakened chains. All he need do is unlock it and set it loose, and then the chemical process would go without his aid within a moment. Focus: that was what he had to do. He meditated on it, favoring silence and contemplation at this moment so that he could unlock the power that was within him. He mused over it, thought about it: steadily he grew more and more into this "thing" that might help him bounce back easily. His fists tightened slightly. His brow furrowed. It was not from pain, but rather from the amount of energy that had to go into thinking - it was difficult for a bruiser like him, that was for certain.

Cyrus knows he was being ridiculous. It wasn't Mrs. Stella's fault - she'd only been protecting them, and that they would've probably died if not for the cave in, but the fire in his head still burns, and the guilt pools in his gut like sticky mud. He tries to let her know he understands, but the sound is quiet and broken, something between a grunt and a whimper.

He's working on auto-pilot; his body knows what to do even though his mind is nothing but static and a few scattered words. He pulls away the makeshift bandage, breath catching in his throat at the sight of the gaping wound. There was something therapeutic to such a simple, rhythmic act of washing away the blood.

There's hardly a thought in his head when his free hand find Ares's and squeezes it tight as if to ground the both of them. Or, who was he kidding, to ground himself.
